Window light is the best bridal light in Lahore

You do not need a studio for beautiful bridal portraits. You need a north-facing window and ten quiet minutes.

When a bride asks me where to do her getting-ready portraits, my answer is always the same: the room with the biggest window, curtains open, lights off.

Window light wraps around the face, catches the kundan and the zari without hot spots, and makes the dupatta look like fabric instead of a red blur. A ring light at a salon will never do that.

How to pick the room

North-facing windows give soft light all day. East-facing windows are lovely before 11 am and harsh after. South and west windows need a sheer curtain in the afternoon, or a white bedsheet taped over the glass, which I carry in my kit for exactly this reason.

Clear the room of clutter before I arrive: suitcases, hangers, water bottles and the tissue box. I would rather spend those ten minutes on portraits than on moving a cousin's shoes out of frame.

Posing by the window

Stand side-on to the window and turn your face slowly towards it until the light reaches both eyes. That is the angle. From there I only ask for small changes: drop the chin, soften the hands, look at the door your father is about to walk through.

Some of the portraits families frame are from these ten minutes, not from the stage. They are quiet, they are honest, and they look like the bride on the best day of her life.
